  3. Avalanches are caused by tight snow pack suddenly released by natural or human causes. Causes

  4. To be safe when an avalanche strikes you should always wear a helmet. Ski and snowboard with a friend. Don't be stupid!! Safety

  5. Facts • Avalanche: A mass of loosened snow, ice, and/or earth suddenly and swiftly sliding down a mountain. • In practice, assumed to be a snow avalanche unless another term such as ice,rock, mud, etc is used.

  6. Facts Cont. • Of the major avalanche hazards, the interruption of communications lines probably occursmost frequently. Places of highest hazard include ski areas, mountain passes, and otherareas where transmission lines cross avalanche paths. In regions where important.

Thousands more are caught in avalanches, partly buried or injured. Everyone from snowmobilers to skiers to highway motorists are caught in the "White Death." Most are fortunate enoughto survive.

  10. Facts • Avalanches can be set off by one person. • They can start off harmless and end up deadly. • They can be small or huge!

  11. Warnings • We really don't have a way to predict when an avalanche will happen. • They are usually caused by human activity.
