LHC Workshop 2009 PID in ALICE Solenoid magnet 0.5 T ALICE: the dedicated HI experiment Why HMPID? • Forward detectors: • PMD • FMD, T0, V0, ZDC Full azimuthal coverage : ITS, TPC, ToF ITS, TPC upto p ~ 600 MeV/c ToF upto ~ 1.2 – 1.4 GeV/c Single-arm detector : HMPID for 1 – 5 GeV/c • Specialized detectors: • HMPID • PHOS • Central tracking system: • ITS • TPC • TRD • TOF • MUON Spectrometer: • absorbers • tracking stations • trigger chambers • dipole

Particle Identification TPC dE/dx 7 TeV pps ≈5-6% Vertex detector pT(min)<100MeV TOF 150k channels! s ≈ 90 ps
Why HMPID? • High pT Suppression in AA Final Data Preliminary Data
pT(assoc) > 2 GeV/c Hard associated particles → suppression 4 < pT(trig) < 6 GeV/c pT(assoc) > 0.15 GeV/c Soft associated particles→ enhancement Jet Quenching
pp@LHC vs. RHIC CMS result: unexpected ‘ridge’ in high Mult. pp somewhat similar phenomenon seen at RHIC in HI collisions
Nuclear Modification Factor P. Fachini (STAR) • Same RAA for ,, • Different RAA for pbar,p,Ks, e(NPE) • J/psi suppressed or not? Zhangbu Xu, QM08, Jaipur, India
K/p Ratio at 900 GeV • Prel. Results: • very large K/p ratio at high pT • not reproduced by event generators
HMPI Detector • RADIATOR • 15 mm liquid C6F14, n ~ 1.2989 @ 175nm, (bg)h = 1.21 • PHOTON CONVERTER • Reflective layer of CsI QE ~ 25% @ 175 nm. • PHOTOELECTRON DETECTOR • MWPC with CH4 at atmospheric pressure (4 mm gap) HV = 2050 V.
VHMPI Detector Project • An Upgrade Project of HMPID • Up to 30 GeV/c • Track-by-Track PID • Just Changing the Cherenkov Radiator : ‘Gas Radiator’: C4F10 (<n>≈1.0014, γth≈18.9) • Limited Radiator length : 80cm : Concave Mirror with VUV(~150nm) reflectivity • Large photosensitive area : ~3m2 • Acceptance : 12% area of TPC, pseudo rapidity |η | < 0.5 (jet fully contained)
VHMPID R&D • Much less photons → Gas Property, Mirror, CsI-PD • Online transparency measurement/cleaning system • Manufactured in PNU → Assemble in progress at CERN • Test Experiments at PS (Oct.2010) & SPS (Nov.2010) 15
