  2. VLC Potential Use Cases and Technical Requirements Samsung Electronics Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  3. Outline • Networked VLC • Social networking • Exchanging information • Local group chatting • Carpooling • Etc. • Police and driver assistance • Road accident, congestion • Driving violation • Emergency • Visual impairment aid • Selling with lights – L commerce • Guide and side information • Campus, stadium, movie theater… Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  4. Social networking I am going to Hilton. Anyone Carpooling? Count me in. • In aircraft, hospital, cruise, train, bus, etc. • Lights are connected internally through a localnetwork • People communicate with each other by VLC hand devices via head/side lights • Share information in local virtual chatting room although people may not know each other at first • Light networked games • Make friends • Carpool. People who are going to the same destination may seek for the chance of carpooling • Tourist group. People may self-organize a tourist group. Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  5. Technical requirements • Environment: indoor, outdoor • Bi-directional • Data type: text, image, data, etc. May support some games not requiring high bandwidth • PHY data rate: 1– 10 Mbps • Latency: not stringent for text, some games such as chess, poker, etc. May be stringent for some other games such as car racing. • Distance: 1-5m • LED intensity: low to medium • Channel type: LOS • Beam pointing: manual, auto • Networked VLC Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  6. Police and driver assistance (1/2) Accident. Road blocked Accident. Road blocked • Road accident. • During an accident, police could send signal from car lights to the traffic lights, road lights, and/or the lights of the neighboring cars, for minimizing congestion. • Cars could be told to change lanes to allow police cars to pass and/or avoid the accident • Cars approaching to the accident spot could also be given alternative routes for detour to avoid congestion. • The congestion report could be distributed further via lights of the car or traffic lights or road lights, etc. Accident. Road blocked Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  7. Technical requirements • Environment: outdoor • Bi-directional • Data type: text, image, data, etc. • PHY data rate: 1 – 10 Mbps • Latency: not stringent for text, image, etc. • Distance: 1-10m • LED intensity: low to medium. Road light can be high intensity. • Channel type: LOS • Beam pointing: auto • Networked or/and point-to-point VLC Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  8. Police and driver assistance (2/2) • Driving violation • Police can signal the specific car committing violation to stop or slow down, through the lights. • Police can warn certain vehicles that they may be in danger of violating speed limits • Drivers can signal back with explanation or information requested by the police • Police may no longer be required to step out of their vehicles (safety) • Police may signal and control the speed of the cars on violations (no high speed chases) Speeding ticket. Drivers license, please. Send divers license Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  9. Technical requirements • Environment: outdoor • Bi-directional • Data type: text, image, data, etc. • PHY data rate: 1 – 10 Mbps • Latency: not stringent for text, image, etc. But with high mobility, the latency may be stringent • Distance: 1-10m • LED intensity: low to high • Channel type: LOS • Beam pointing: auto, manual • Point to point VLC Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  10. Emergency • Via lights, ambulance could signal the other cars and traffic lights. • Emergency lights and exit lights • When emergency lights flashing, in the building, or other places, directions to exit could be signaled by emergency lights or exit lights to mobile devices, so that people would not go to dangerous places or blocked ways, • Knowledge of dangerous places or blocked ways could also be signaled to emergency lights or exit lights from mobile devices for distribution. C-wing blocked A-wing blocked Fire ! Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  11. Technical requirements • Environment: indoor • Bi-directional • Data type: text, image, voice, data, etc. • PHY data rate: 1 – 100+ Mbps • Latency: stringent in emergency • Distance: 1-10m • LED intensity: low to high • Channel type: LOS • Beam pointing: auto, manual • Point to point/multipoint VLC Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  12. Blind navigation • VLC could provide visual impairment aid • E.g., when a blind person tries to across street, he/she may use hand device to try to find out whether the light is red or green. Once the signal is detected, the hand device would talk to the person about the traffic light status. • VLC can provide location information in the absence of explicit signs • E.g., Street sign missing on the roads Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  13. Technical requirements • Environment: outdoor, indoor • Bi-directional • Data type: text, image, voice, data, etc. • PHY data rate: 1 – 100+ Mbps • Latency: not stringent • Distance: 1-10m • LED intensity: low to high • Channel type: LOS, large FOV • Beam pointing: auto, manual • Point to point/multipoint VLC Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  14. Selling with lights – L commerce • Stores could utilize the lights in parking lot, the lights from ceiling, etc., to sell content, such as DVD, e-book, music. • Stores can be e.g., Gas station, Grocery store, etc. • People could set up the session to download the e-content, then leave the car. • In places such as squares, parks, etc., people can walk around and buy content from road lights or other lights • In pleasant weather, many people may go out and walk around in evening, in parks or squares in cities • People could download DVDs etc. from the nearby lights, to enjoy. DVD, music, etc, Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  15. Technical requirements • Environment: outdoor, indoor • Mainly downloading with limited backward signaling • Data type: text, image, data, files, etc. • PHY data rate: 1 – 100+ Mbps • Latency: not stringent • Distance: 2-10m • LED intensity: medium to high • Channel type: LOS • Beam pointing: auto, manual • Point to multipoint VLC Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  16. Guide and side information • In places such as campus, stadium, … • Use the lights from ceiling, around the building, or any available lights, to get the information of introduction of the building, inventory, etc. • Search the store directions, sale/coupon information • History and directions of buildings/landmarks in campus • Get the side information of the players in stadium • Get the side information of the actor and actress in a movie • It can be interactive as well for intelligent guidance Player’s information, Advertisement, Emergency guide, Etc. Ying Li, Samsung Electronics

  17. Technical requirements • Environment: indoor, outdoor • Uni/Bi-directional • Data type: text, image, data, etc. • PHY data rate: 1 – 100+ Mbps • Latency: not stringent for text, image, etc. • Distance: 2-10m • LED intensity: low to high • Channel type: LOS • Beam pointing: auto, manual • Point to multipoint VLC Ying Li, Samsung Electronics
