Basic Facts • Officially know as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints • Founded in 183o by Joseph Smith • Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah • Considered a division of Christianity by its followers, but a cult by others • Mormons follow a strict dietary code known as The Word of Wisdom. It requires abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, and illegal drugs.
Joseph Smith • Considered a profit of God by Mormons • Grew up in the Burnt Over district of New York during the second Great Awakening. Had a hard time deciding which Christian denomination to join . • Wanted to find the true church of God • Was given the advice to ask God himself what to do.
Joseph Smith cont. • One day he went into the woods, knelt down, and emptied his conscience. • A pillar of light descended upon him and he was given the truth by two angels of Jesus Christ • Seven years later returned to the woods and received a record which contained a new testament, The Book of Mormon, written in gold. • Translated the text to paper and instituted the Mormon church in 1830
Controversy • Joseph Smith had several wives at the same time throughout his life • Before his assassination, he instituted polygamy among his followers. • Many people because of this consider Mormonism to be a cult rather than a Christian denomination • Either way, polygamy was renounced in 1890 and is now strictly forbidden.
