Course Materials • Prescribed textbook: • “Fundamentals of Multimedia” by Ze-Nian Li and Mark S. Drew (Highly recommended by Prof. Chang) • Other references: • Multimedia Communications: “Applications, Networks, Protocols and Standards” by Fred Halsall • Rafael C. Gonzalez, Richard E. Woods: Digital Image Processing. Prentice Hall; 2nd edition, 2002 • Lecture notes will be available online
Course Materials • We’ll cover most of the fundamental concepts using the book by Li& Drew • Extra materials are included from other two reference books • Toward the end of the course (last month), students are expected to present topics in more depth as part of the final project.
Lecture Format • Learning should not be passive, but active • I highly encourage students’ participation • The more active you are in class discussion, the higher your score for class participation.

Course Outline • Multimedia Data Compression • Lossless compression algorithms • Lossy compression algorithms • Image compression standards • Basic video compression techniques • MPEG video coding I --- MPEG-1&2 • MPEG video Coding II --- MPEG-4,7&beyond • Basic audio compression techniques • MPEG audio compression
Course Outline • Multimedia Communication and Retrieval • Computer and multimedia networks • Multimedia network communications and applications • Wireless networks • Content-based retrieval in digital libraries • Each topic takes on average 1 lecture.
