Democritus Lived 460-370 B.C. in Greece First man to discover atoms Matter was not definitely visible Matter was made up of tiny particles called atomos, the Greek work for atoms Atoms could not be created, destroyed, or divided Atoms moved through empty space Said it was impossible to divide things ad infinitum, or endlessly

    3. Aristotle Lived 384-322 B.C. in Greece Rejected the idea of atoms Believed empty space did not exist Matter is made of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water Influential philosopher, orator Did not do experiments during this time

    4. Democritus vs. Aristotle Matter is composed of atoms, which move through empty space Atoms are solid, homogeneous, indestructible, and indivisible Different kinds of atoms have different sizes and shapes Empty space cannot exist Matter is made of earth, fire, air, and water
