  2. Equalities & Planning Directorate • Taking an integrated approach to equality strands • Recognising the need for specialist knowledge and advice • Linking Equalities Advisers with NHS Boards

  3. Equalities and Planning - purpose To be a locus of expertise, advice knowledge, support and influence on equality, diversity and health inequalities to NHS Scotland. The Directorate will add value to the NHS by undertaking national programmes of work to support implementation of systems, services or strategies by partners to meet the needs of their diverse populations

Equalities & Planning - functions • Developing and delivering national projects, as appropriate, to support boards, eg impact assessment • Identifying and disseminating best practice, eg engaging with diverse communities • Influencing communications across the NHS and with partners • Facilitating networking • Working with other national partners, eg Scottish Government, Equality and Human Rights Commission, Special Health Boards

Equalities & Planning - functions • Ensuring that strategic and corporate planning for NHS Health Scotland is compliant with statutory requirements, delivers on equality and diversity objectives and builds in equality and diversity to internal business planning • Oversees organisational performance management to ensure alignment with the inequalities objectives of the BHBC Action Plan

  6. Equalities & Planning - structure • Head of Development & Planning Team • To provide strategic influence within HS and across partner organisations at national level to ensure equalities agenda is integrated • To provide information on equalities and disseminate models of good practice

  7. Equalities & Planning - structure • Head of Equalities Support Team • To provide equalities support to the NHS through 6 Equalities Advisers posts • To provide advice and expertise to facilitate organisational change • To promote best practice and support network development

  8. Directorate developments - update • Health Scotland Board approval of role, functions and structure – November 2007 • Cath Denholm appointed Director – part time return to work January 2008 • Formal establishment – April 2008 • Initial meeting with EHRC • Consultation meetings – 15 NHS Boards
