  2. Who was Buddha? • Read the cards in your group. • Order them in what seems a logical timeline of the Buddha’s life. • When you finish… answer these questions in your in class notebook: • What are FOUR traits of Siddhartha’s personality? • What are FOUR traits of the Buddha? • What are TWO events that have religious “power” to Buddhists? In Other Words: What are two events that convey spiritual mystery and would be told over and over in the religion?

  3. Was Buddha a Rebel? • Siddhartha was a Hindu • He did not “create” a new religion • Instead, he provided an alternative view of life and the way people should think about their religious and moral duties In your in-class notebook: • What aspect(s) of Hinduism would you criticize? • Why?

  4. Buddha’s Points of Contention • Brahmins hoarded religious secrets and charged high prices for ministry, rituals, celebrations • Brahmins thought more of their power than religion • The ritualswere no longer spiritual • often just “mechanical” • rote, same every time, only to bring about miracles) • Too many traditions were irrelevant to people’s lives • especially the use of Sanskrit (an ancient language no longer used) • The belief in samsara was too limiting and discouraging • people didn’t believe they could ever achieve moksha and would always be reincarnated as the same or lower caste

  5. The Four Noble Truths(Answer in your in-class notebook) • Truth #1 • Examples of Truth #1 in our culture or your lives? • Truth #2 • Examples that prove Truth #2 correct?

  6. The Four Noble Truths • Truth #3 • How does Truth #3 provide an appealing alternative to Hindu beliefs? • How does the Middle Path/Eightfold Path compare to other ethical systems, like the Ten Commandments?
