NHMFL High B/T FacilitySTRATEGIC PLANS -- PRIORITIES • Operate Multiple Bays of Microkelvin Lab. • (currently: Bay 3 plus part-time Bay 2) • (a) Replace 10 T magnet in Bay 2 with 16.5 T from Bay 3 • (after commissioning new 20 T system in Bay 3). • Provide highest B/T > 2.105 T/K (Bay 3: 6.104 T/K) • PrNi5 nuclear stage in Bay 3, Cu nuclear stage in Bay 2 • -- requires significant modification of dewar and internal geometry. • Need additional person(engineering) for approx. 2 years. • (b) Upgrade Bay 2 refrigerator (gas circulation) & magnet power supply • GOALS : (i) Robust full-time user time for Bay 2 : higher B/ lower T • (ii) Expand to Bay 1 with 10 T – needs equipment, additional staff • & liquid He costs (Total: $0.75M/5 years)
NHMFL High B/T FacilityHIGH PRIORITIES II. Extend Parameter Space (a) Develop high pressure (GPa) capability at Very Low T meet new user interests, e.g P dependence of QPT , BEC transitions of organic quantum magnets, NQR correlated electron systems would be unique (need dedicated expert to develop (senior postdoc.) (b) Ultra-high precision measurements Enhance sensitivity/low noise capability Translate low T/high B NMR electronics to other systems for higher sensitivity, e.g. magnetic susceptibility, transport -- --- novel magnet systems (low dimensions, frustration), half-metallic states)
