Benefits of a Career Fair • Learning about new companies • Create a plan for the Career Fair • Learn about the companies that will attend the Career Fair • Create a list of your top companies • Review companies’ websites and any literature you’ve obtained • Ability to showcase your talent • Give your elevator Pitch • Bring copies of your resume to Career Fair! • Po • Networking • Explain why you are interested in the company • Discuss jobs you are interested in • Ability to Interview with Companies • Apply for interviews prior to the conference • During Career Fairs ask if they are interviewing & if you would have the opportunity to interview • Get the Job!
Preparing for the Career Fair • Review the list of companies attending the Career Fair • Create a list of your top companies • Create a plan for the Career Fair • RESEARCH!! • Review company website and any literature you’ve obtained • Know the latest “news” about the company • Review job descriptions and decide what interests you most • Prepare quality & appropriate questions based upon your research • Talk to other students who interned with the company • Career Services can help you identify those students • Review your resume for accuracy and prepare to answer questions pertaining to your experience • Bring 1-2 copies of your resume to Career Fair! • Wear your best suit!
Developing Ways to Stand Out • How to best sell yourself • Have a strong introduction that highlights your greatest strengths • Know what you want to do • Know the company • Approach the right companies that make sense for your degree; not just all of them • Match your values & qualifications to the company and job description • Ask what steps are needed to get into the interview process • How to leverage your research • Explain why you are interested in the company • Ask good questions
During the Career Fair– The Do’s and Don’ts • Don’t… • Tell the recruiter what you think he/she wants to hear • Be afraid to discuss your successes and most positive traits • Push/force your resume on a recruiter • Say “I just need a job” or “I’m open to anything” • Play with hair, accessories, etc. • Make inappropriate jokes • Babble • Be negative or arrogant Do… • Be positive and enthusiastic • Introduce yourself – Elevator Speech • Explain why you are interested in the company • Ask questions about the opportunities in which you are interested • Outline your goals and accomplishments • Have passion! • Bring Resumes (for your reference; NOT to hand out) • Be polite, tactful, and sincere – eye contact is important • Dress neatly and appropriately in business professional attire (conservative, not trendy) • Turn cell phone off
Keep your e-mail address professional • Use only one phone number • Put the name that you prefer to be addressed by
Include your graduation year • Include your GPA if above 3.0 • Include your minor below your major, if applicable. • Include any University Honors if applicable • Add location of school • If you transferred schools, include your original school, but keep it below your current university
Outline experience in chronological order, beginning with your first job. • Start each line with a different action verb • Quantify your responsibilities • Include your “title”
Emphasize if you hold a position or serve on a committee • Record any notable accomplishments • Note length of time with an organization
Specify client interactions and teamwork • Talk about your responsibilities • Mention any projects accomplished outside of daily responsibilities or your job description
Highlight accomplishments outside of professional experience • Tell a story with every line on your resume • Do not lie on your resume
Add any additional skills or interests • Keep it to only ONE page • Format is key – easy to read • Triple Check for spelling & formatting errors
