  2. IMPORTANT!!!! Math 110 is a Terminal Course IT IS NOT a prerequisite for any other math class! If your major requires Math 112 or higher,you DO NOT belong in MATH 110. If you think that you MIGHT change to a majorrequiring MATH 112 or higher, you should considerthe possibility of taking a math other than MATH 110. I’ll be glad to talk with you about this if you have questions or concerns.

  4. Calculator For this course, you MUST have THIS particular calculator: Casio fx-260Solar School edition Although you will also have access to the computer calculator, there are certain things that we cover that the computer calculator will not be able to do…so PLEASE get this exact calculator. Using a different hand-held calculator on a test will be treated as academic misconduct.

  5. Access Codes Every student must have a MyLabsPlus access code. The code comes packaged with the textbook or may be purchased separately from within the course software. Either way, the code gives you access to anonline textbook, video lectures, examples of assignments and many more useful tools tohelp you be successful in this course. There is a temporary code (good for 21 days) available in your course software. It is, of course better to have your own code from the beginning, but you MUST have your own code by the end of 21 days.

  6. Course Grades Grades will be assigned in this course. Possible grades in this course are A, B, C (+/-) or NC. A grade of NC means you receive no credit for the course. If you receive an NC, you must take thecourse again, but it does not affect your GPA. The last day to withdraw from the course is Wednesday, 10/29. No withdrawals will be given after this date.

  7. Course Grades • Participation (Class/Lab) 2% • Homework average 13% • Quiz average 15% • Study Plan 10% • 4 tests (15% each) 60% TOTAL 100% Students must earn a minimum of 70% to successfully pass this course.

  8. Class & Lab Attendance Class participation is recorded. Class meetings will beevery Monday and Wednesday, 4-4:50 PM. -Attention and participation are required -No cell phones or laptops out during class -You must attend the entire class for credit This is a 3-credit hour course.The class meets 2 hours each week but forthe 3rd hour you are required to spend at least 60 minutes per week doing math work in the MTLC. -You must swipe ACTion card in AND out for MTLC time credit. -You may use the MTLC any time it is open. (You are never required to be there at a particular time.)

  10. Common Rules for the MTLC • The MTLC is a Math classroom. Be courteous and considerate of fellow students. • Do not hesitate to ask questions if you need help. The instructors and tutors in the MTLC are there to help you. • You should be doing math work only. • No food, drinks, tobacco products ,cell phone use, loud music, profanity, or companions.

  11. Homework There are 20 graded homework assignments forthe semester (mostly one per section) with deadlines shown both in the syllabus and in the software. • You may save, close, and return to complete the assignment later—up to the deadline. • Homework exercises may be worked and reworked as many times as desired. Just click on’Similar Exercise’ to get a replacement exercise. • Your 3 lowest homework grades will automatically be dropped at end of semester and the average of the remaining homework grades will count for13% of your final grade.

  12. Quizzes • There is a graded quiz for each section (21 total). • Do not click the ’Submit’ button until you havecompleted the entire quiz. • You have Unlimited attempts on each quiz. Only yourhighest score will be used in the course grade calculation. • You can review your quiz only immediately after submitting. You can receive no help during a quiz,but may get help, if needed, afterwards. • Your 3 lowest quiz grades will automatically bedropped at end of semester. • The average of your remaining quiz grades will countfor 15% of final grade.

  13. Study Plan • Your study plan is a very good review before each test. • Your quiz performance informs your study plan…so,work on your study plan section only after completingthe homework and quiz for that section. • Your study plan is unique to you based on yourquiz performance. • Your study plan is due by 5pm on December 12(the last day of exams). • Your study plan is worth 10% of your final grade.

  14. Test Deadlines Math 110 test days will be on TUESDAYof the designated ‘test week’ butyou choose what time to take the test. Test 1: Tuesday, September 16th Test 2: Tuesday, October 7th Test 3: Mon Oct. 27th through Wed Oct. 29th* Test 4: Tuesday, November 18th *Test 3 is during the short Fall break week so you will beable to choose any day Mon-Wed for your 3rd test only. Optional Final Exam: Sunday – Friday, Dec. 8 – Dec. 12 (You’ll register separately for the Final, choosing day & time.)

  15. Missed work Policy Missed homework or quiz deadline Your score for an incomplete homework or quiz is justthe score earned on it when the deadline arrives. Your score for a homework or quiz not started before the deadline is 0. But remember that your 3 low scores will be dropped. Missed test If a test is missed FOR ANY REASON, the zero score will be considered your lowest and will be replaced by the final exam score. Please be aware that only one exam score will be replaced. If you will miss any assignments due to official University business, you must make arrangements beforehand.

  16. Replacement Policy • The Math 110 Final Exam is NOT REQUIRED. • You have the option to take a Comprehensive Final Exam and have that score replace the lowest test score. • However, zero test grades due to academic misconduct will not be replaced.

  17. Working at Home Students can work in the software from home. • To do so, use the MyMathLab Browser Check in the software and install all necessary plug-ins(one time only). • The software MAY NOT work appropriately with the Safari Browser. FireFox(Mozilla) is probably the best browser to use. • If you receive an error message indicating that your session has expired or you have “timed out” please clear your browser history, try a different browser, or restart your computer.

  18. Working at Home Homework and quizzes may be completed at home. Work well ahead of deadlines to be safe. If you have any trouble, come to the MTLC right away to complete your assignments on time. Deadlines will not be extended because of home computer/Internet issues. Tests must be completed in the MTLC.

  19. Disability Accommodations • Accommodations must be set up throughthe UA Office of Disability Services (ODS)(205) 348-4285 • Bring your paperwork from ODS to your instructor or directly to the MTLC. • Do this as soon as possible. • This must be done each semester.

  21. Software Log In Information Registration in the software has already been donefor you. Detailed descriptions of the 2 log in optionscan be found the in syllabus, at the top of page 2. Log in option 2: -Log into myBama, click ‘Blackboard’ and then go into your MATH 110-009 Blackboard Learn course. Log in option 1: -Go to www.ua.mylabsplus.com with Username = crimson email prefix(ex: jksmith) and Password = CWID (ex: 12345678) You will need your MyLabsPlus access code in order to get to the math content for the first time in the software.

  22. Before our next class (if you haven’t already done so)… • Get an access code (or be prepared to buy it with a credit/debit card through the software) • Log into software (even if you don’t have your code yet.) (For help, go to the MTLC.) • Take the Syllabus Quiz • Use your syllabus during the quiz! (Link to full syllabus available in software.) • Retake it if necessary to get 100%! Unlimited number of attempts prior to the deadline. • Get a notebook – for class notes and assignment work.

  23. Final thoughts Make the commitment now to do what it takes to be successful in this course: • Attend class and the MTLC regularly • Complete every assignment on or ahead of schedule • Stay on schedule (Allow plenty of time to do your best!) • Get help when you need it – MTLC Staff and CAS Staff are there FOR YOU!
