Gravity Chapter 7
Objectives • Be able to explain to the motions of the bodies in the solar system using Newton’s Laws. • Apply Newton’s law of Universal gravitation as it relates to changes in mass and distance. • Understand the magnitude of gravity as a force as it relates to other forces. • Describe the relationship between the tides and the motion of the Moon/Sun/Earth system. • Discuss Einstein’s modifications to Newton’s understanding of gravity. • Explain how the concepts of the Big Bang, the expanding universe, conservation of energy and universal gravitation have lead to theories like dark matter and dark energy.
Newton’s Laws. • Is the Earth accelerating? Why? • Why doesn’t the Earth crash into the Sun? • Does the Earth pull on the Sun?
Questions related to the Earth’s orbit. • What is the difference between rotation and revolution? • Is the Earth’s orbit circular? • Is it hotter when we are closer? • Why is there night and Day? • Does the moon rotate? Revolve?
Other questions • Why are there seasons? • How are the equinox different than the solstice? • Why is it cooler at higher elevations? • Are satellites out of the Earth’s gravitational pull? • What are the lines for the tropic of Cancer and Capricorn?
How does the force of gravity change? Change the mass. Change the distance. Increase Decrease Double Cut in half. • Increase • Decrease • Double • Cut in half.
Presentation Requirements • Using written notes or a Powerpoint. Explain the topic thoroughly. • Answer all related questions • Provide related facts or details. • Create 2 test questions related to your topic. • Clearly present your topic to the class. • Create a visual to be posted in the hall that explains your topic.
