The Holy Ghost Baptism is a Promise!
The Old Testament contains promises of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. • “But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. • And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more” • (Jeremiah 31:33-34).
The Old Testament contains promises of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. • “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. • And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them” • (Ezekiel 36:26-27).
The Old Testament contains promises of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. • “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: • And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit” • (Joel 2:28-29).
God promised that His Spirit would actually live inside of man. • When the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Day of Pentecost, it was a fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy.
The Question was asked: • “What meaneth this?” • (Acts 2:12).
The Answer: • “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, • I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh ” • (Acts 2:16-17).
“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified)” (John 7:37-39).
God made a promise, and He keeps His promises. • “And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform” • (Colossians 3:17). “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19).
The baptism of the Holy Spiritis for “whosoever.” • “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” • (Acts 2:21).
The baptism of the Holy Spiritis for “whosoever”. • For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call • (Acts 2:39).
Benefits of Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost • Teaches us all things; • Gives understanding of the Word • “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” • (John 14:26).
Benefits of Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost • Refreshes and gives rest to the weary • “To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear” • (Isaiah 28:12).
Benefits of Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost • Gives power for witnessing • “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” • (Acts 1:8).
Benefits of Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost • Provides a promise that we will be resurrected • “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you” • (Romans 8:11).
Benefits of Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost • Helps us to intercede • “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” • (Romans 8:26).
Benefits of Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost • Christ puts seal of ownership on us • “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” • (Romans 8:9).
Benefits of Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost • Will raise up a standard against our enemies • “So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him” • (Isaiah 59:19).
They Shall Speak in Tongues! • The initial (first) evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance.
The Book of Acts provides five occurrences of people receiving the Spirit. • Three of these accounts specify speaking in tongues as the initial proof of receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit
Let’s Look at the Scriptures: • “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” • (Acts 2:4).
Let’s Look at the Scriptures: • “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God” • (Acts 10:44-45).
Let’s Look at the Scriptures: “Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied” (Acts 19:2-6).
Let’s Look at the Scriptures: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:17).
Let’s Look at the Scriptures: “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49).
Conclusion: Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit.
