SUPPLEMENTAL FIGURE S3.Growth in BHI over 84 days at 4°C of L. monocytogenes strain 10403S and selected null mutant strains, using a starting inoculum of 102 CFU/ml. Log-phase cells (OD600=0.4) grown at 37°C were inoculated into pre-chilled (4°C) BHI to a starting inoculum of 102 CFU/ml. Data shown represents three independent experiments. Error bars indicate standard deviation. (A) Growth of L. monocytogenes strain 10403S and selected deletion mutant strains over 84 days of growth at 4°C. L. monocytogenes strain 10403S is shown as a solid line (▬) and deletion mutant strains are shown as dotted lines (- - - ). The ΔctsR strain has the most profound growth defect compared to the parent strain and is marked. Separate ANOVA analyses of log CFU/ml data for different days of growth at 4°C (i.e., days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 56, 70, and 84) were performed to determine whether there was a significant effect of the factor “strain” on log CFU/ml (indicating that at least one of the mutant strains showed growth different from the parent strain on a given day); p values are shown above a time point if this ANOVA analyses revealed a significant effect of the factor “strain” (i.e., days 28, 35, 42, 70, and 84). (B) log CFU/ml for the parent strain (10403S) and selected deletion mutant strains that showed log CFU/ml values that were significantly different from the parent strain on a given day; ***, **, and * indicate that log CFU/ml values for a given mutant strain differed with p<0.0001, p<0.01, or p<0.05 from log CFU/ml values for the parent strain.
