What do you do when you have a hunch something is wrong? • Think it over first • Use your head and conscience to reason things out • If you are required to make a hasty decision, ask God and focus inward to see what you consider the most loving situation

Ten Commandments 2 Groups of Commandments • Those that deal with God • Those that deal with others • Truly loving God=Truly loving others • Thus violating the commandments hurts or relationship with God and with others
Fundamental norms for all human conduct • Laws from God that lead to God given freedom • Every just law can trace back to a principle in the Ten Commandments • Foundation of relationship with God and others • Backbone of social and moral life

Is this a violation of the first commandment? • Nicole has a lot of questions about her religious faith. Sometimes she wonders if God really exists, but then she feels guilty for wondering. • Briana just doesn’t care about religion. She’s too busy thinking about boys, shopping, and labels to think about God.
Is this a violation of the second commandment? • Lynn’s every other word, or so her mother says, is “God” this and “God” that. Her mother is always telling her to stop throwing God’s name around. But Lynn doesn’t see the harm in it– “everybody does it,” she says. • Vanessa has trouble praying. She never seems to get what she asks for– like a date with a certain guy or a good grade on the test she didn’t study for. • When Drew gets mad about something, he explodes at God. Sometimes he even gets mad at God when he doesn’t understand why bad things happen to him and the people he loves. When he jokingly mentions that he tells God off sometimes his grandmother tells him it’s a sin.
Is this a violation of the third commandment? • Amy is always stressed out because she never takes enough time to just relax and enjoy herself. • Carlos’ elderly grandmother doesn’t want to miss going to Mass on Sundays. Her doctor, however, tells her that because of her poor health, she shouldn’t go out in cold weather. She tells Carlos she feels like she’s sinning if she doesn’t go to Mass and him to take her anyway.
Is this a violation of the fourth commandment? • Maritza who is twenty-four, wants to move across the country to take a new job and live a climate she likes much better. Her mother, who is fifty, commands Maritza not to move and makes her feel guilty by telling her that she has an obligation to stay here and look after her mother (who is in excellent health). • Ashley’s mom hardly hears from her while she is away at college—unless she needs money. • Stephanie is always picking on and putting down her 8 year old sister, calling her a “little twerp” and much worse. • Jaylise, who is working to get money to go back to college, fudges on her taxes, not reporting all of her tip income. He figures that the government should just collect more from the idle rich and stop taking all of the money from hard-working people who are struggling financially like him.
Is this a violation of the fifth commandment? • Dr. Martin believes abortion is wrong, but performs abortions anyway to make extra money. He says it’s the woman, not him, who has to make the moral decision about abortion. • Samantha says she hates Jim for breaking up with her and she hopes that he gets in a car accident and dies. • Sheila is furious at Jasmine for “stealing” her boyfriend. She decided to do whatever she can to give Jasmine a hard time about it.
Is this a violation of the sixth commandment? • Catherine likes to dress in a sexually provocative way that leaves very little to the imagination. She enjoys being noticed and attracting guys that way. She figures, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it.” • Nicole likes to listen to music that has sexually explicit lyrics. She doesn’t agree with the lyrics, but she just likes the beat. • John and Lucy are thinking of maybe marrying after graduation from college. For now, they want to live together first to find out how compatible they are. They figure that will help increase their odds of success if they do decide to marry.
Is this a violation of the seventh commandment? • Melissa has a habit of borrowing things and not returning them. Sometimes she deliberately keeps the stuff she’s borrowed not intending to return it unless the owner asks for it back. • Kayla finds a wallet in the locker room with an ID and $50. She decides to keep it.
Is this a violation of the eighth commandment? • Yasmine savors juicy gossip and loves to pass it along if she discovers a fault about someone, she can hardly wait to tell all of her friends. • Claudette lies about others so that she can be seen in a better light. • When the teacher asks if you saw your Diammond cheating, you tell the truth that yes you saw her.
Is this a violation of the ninth commandment? • Marissa is always very flirtatious with guys, giving them come hither stares and always talking about their physical attributes. • Ashley has been married to Matt for three years. She meets a cute new co worker and begins having lunch with him a few times a week. Eventually he asks her for dinner and she goes.
Is this a violation of the tenth commandment? • Getting rich is Elizabeth’s ultimate goal in life. Even if she has to step on a few toes to do it. • Shakema sees her friends new shoes and tells her that they are cute and she would love to get a pair just like them.
