  2. Building the Arc It took 30 years to build the Arc. Construction started in 1806 and ended in 1836. J.F. Chalgrin started the construction until he died. Shortly afterwards L. Goust, J.N. Huyot, and G.A. Blouet completed the Arc.

  3. Why was the Arc built? The Arc de Triomphe was built as a memorial for all of the fallen French soldier during the French Revolution.

  4. Location The Arc is located in the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle, in France.

  6. Memorial Flame The memorial flame was first ignited by a man named Maginot on November 11, 1923. It has been lit every since. Rekindled everyday at 6 o’ clock.

  7. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier The tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located in front of the Arc de Triomphe. It holds the remains of an unidentifiable soldier.
