  6. Shares skills, experience and knowledge • Seeks opportunities to develop new demonstration projects, using PII criteria • Assist funding, by mentoring and creation of a donor database

CREATION OF THE RISC RISC WAS CREATED IN 2005 BY THE CHIEF EXECUTIVES OF THE CNMI, GUAM, YAP, AND PALAU, TO COORDINATE AND COLLABORATE REGIONALLY TO EFFECTIVELY ADDRESS THE THREAT OF INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES IN MICRONESIA. MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN TO ANY STATE OR NATION IN MICRONESIA – INITIALLY THOSE WITH AN AFFILIATION WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (THE FORMER TRUST TERRITORY OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDS)

Why RISC? • The Problem – our islands are small, isolated, and vulnerable: • Micronesia is a victim of its own uniqueness: the things that make Micronesia unique and special also make it particularly susceptible to the ravages of invasive species. • Micronesian economies are small and the governments often lack the resources necessary to address invasive species issues. • Travel and trade between countries, territories, commonwealths, and individual islands in Micronesia often spread the invasive problems of one island to its neighbors.

Why RISC? • The Solution – A Unified Micronesian Effort: • Capitalizing on the close relationships and cultural similarities of its members; • RISC brings Micronesian Governments together to collaboratively address the invasive species issues that threaten the whole region. • This cooperative effort allows members to develop policy initiatives together to provide a unified effort against invasive species, combine limited resources, and promote efficiency by sharing and capitalizing on members’ strengths and capabilities.

  17. THE RISC MISSION To prevent the introduction of invasive alien species to islands across the region. To control and reduce existing populations or, when feasible, eradicate these species through coordination of efforts throughout Micronesia.

  20. What’s Next? • Implement the Strategic Plan by: • Continuing to improve communication among RISC members • Continuing efforts to expand membership to include all of Micronesia • Developing regional strategies, policies, and public education materials
