General user guidelines Label all chemicals Remove materials and clean common areas (microscope, hoods, etc.) after finishing work Leave a note/check with other users prior to borrowing equipment (e.g. radiometer) Promptly return equipment when done The room should like it was when you entered
3006 - Hoods • organic SOLVENT and ACID/BASE in separate hoods • Solvent = acetone, methanol, IPA • Keep carboy closed at all times • Keep sash windows shut when not using
3006 –Types of Trash • Monomer Contaminated Glass • Rinse with solvent into carboy (keep closed at all times) • Once dry, place in broken glass container • Chemical Contaminated Labware (kimwipes, pipette tips) • Put in “Oily Waste” yellow container • When full,close bag and label “Contaminated Labware, monomer, plastic pipettes, paper products”
3006 – Acticure • If left on, note when you will be done using for the day • UV must be on for at least 20 minutes, can be left on during the morning • Do not adjust settings without permission while others are logged in • Dispose of dirty pipettes, paper towels, etc. • Leave fan on for 15 minutes after turning off UV
3041 • Spinner • Take out chuck before cleaning • Replace aluminum foil after you finished • PDMS Scale • Clean up around and top of the scale after measuring and mixing • Dispose of unused PDMS or let others finish excess • Use separate dishes for first/second development steps • Save fresh SU-8 developer • Hood • Keep sash windows closed • Keep solvent carboy closed
2046 – Cell Trash • Cell contaminated devices or glass (no virus, or recombinant stuff) • Spray with some 1-10% bleach solution • Put in broken glass disposal • Large amounts of cell waste should be dealt with elsewhere and should be autoclaved!

Sharps disposal in labs • Sharps - JUST needles with syringe bodies • Do not recap needles • Expose any prepolymer mixture before putting in sharps container • Do not overfill the sharps container • Call Chemical safety to come pick up the boxes when full • Make sure to get a replacement sharps container - Fisher sells them
Water in labs • RGW – “Reagent Grade Water” General purpose • DI Water – Nanopure, ~ 18 Mohm • Tap water Make sure that you refill with the right water
