Magnets The dipole magnets are used to establish the particle orbit. Currently, 10 T is possible, and by switching material from NbTi to Nb3Sn, in the near future 16 T is being considered feasible (even considered as an upgrade for the LHCP. Therefore, we can safely pick 20 T as our target field strength (LHC currently is around 8 T).
Magnets – alternative/upgrade More technologically advanced: Superconducting YBCO coated conductors. Advantage: can produce stronger field before quenching. Disadvantage: very brittle, no mass-production yet. 26.8 T has already been reached in the lab with a YBCO magnet that could potentially be mass-produced (small field, solenoid), so maybe this technology will be available for us, either at the start or as an upgrade. These kinds of magnets should be able to provide a 30 T field easily (even 50 T is being seen as reachable in the not-so-distant future).
