WHERE SUCH INSTRUMENTS ARE USED • ALL THESE INSTRUMENTS ARE USED IN VILLAGES AS WELL AS IN TOWNS BY BANDS. • THE FUSION OF AFRICAN INSTRUMENTS AND WESTERN INSTRUMENTS PRODUCES A RICH SOUND. • SUCH SOUND IS VERY SOOTHING AND IN MOST CASES MAKE PEOPLE CLOSER TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM.
CHORDOPHONES • INSTRUMENTS WHICH PRODUCE SOUND BY USING CHORDS • EXAMPLES: BANJO, BABATONE, KALUMBU ETC.
CHORDOPHONES ARE PLAYED FOR ENTERTAINMENT ESPECIALLY DURING CONCERTS, WEDDINGS, CHURCH SERVICES, ETC. • SUCH INSTRUMENTS ARE USED MORE IN RURAL AREAS THAN IN URBAN
IDIOPHONES. • INSTRUMENTS WHICH PRODUCES SOUND BY THEMSELVES. IDIO MEANS ITSELF. • EXAMPLES: SHAKERS, INSOMBO, CHISEKESE ETC.
IDOPHONES ARE WELL DESIGNED BY THE PEOPLE OF WESTERN PROVINCE IN ZAMBIA • SUCH INSTRUMENTS LOOK LIKE KEYBOARDS AND THE QUALITY OF SOUND IS VERY GOOD • SUCH INSTRUMENTS ARE USED IN DANCES LIKE SIYOMBOKA AND DURING TRADITIONAL CEREMONIES.
MEMBRANOPHONES • INSTRUMENTS WHICH PRODUCE SOUND BY BEATING OR SCRATCHING SKINS WHICH COVERS THEM. • EXAMPLES: NAMALWA, ITUMBA, SENSELE, ICIBITIKU, MBALULE ETC.
MEMBRANOPHONES ARE VERY COMMON IN VILLAGES AS COMPARED TO TOWNS. • APART FROM PLAYING FOR ENTERTAINMENT THEY ARE ALSO USED FOR INFORMING PEOPLE ABOUT EVENTS. • FOR INSTANCE IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE, WHEN YOU HEAR A LOT OF DRUMS BEING PLAYED, JUST KNOW THAT WHERE THE DRUMS ARE BEING BEATEN THERE IS BEER. • IN CONTRAST TO NORTHEN PROVINCE BEATING DRUMS MEANS THERE IS A FUNERAL.
