Plate Tectonics • The Earth is divided into large plates composed of oceanic and continental crust. • Convection currents in the mantle of Earth causes sea-floor spreading. • Magma is forced to the surface and forms mid-ocean ridges between two plates. • As more magma rises the plates are pushed apart causing earthquakes, volcanoes and the formation of new mountain ranges.
