Dali’s Childhood • Dali was raised in the small farming community of Figueras, Catalogna, Spain. • Dali was one of three children. • His older brother died before he was born. • His parents believed Dali was the reincarnation of his dead older brother. • He was the son of a wealthy notary.
Educating a Legend • He took his first drawing lessons at age ten. • Dali attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. • He never graduated from the academy • Refused to take final exams • Claimed he was more qualified that the ones who were administering the exams
The Artist Revealed • His first exhibition was in a family apartment. • His first solo exhibition took place in Barcelona in 1925. • Dali’s paintings were first shown in America in 1928. • He had gained international acclaim by the age of 24.
Gala • Dali met Gala in the early 1930’s. • Gala became Dali’s companion, muse, and even model for some of his paintings. • Dali and Gala were married in 1934. • She managed Dali’s business affairs while they were married. • Gala died in 1982, leaving Dali in a state of deep depression.

Dali’s End • After Gala’s death Dali moved to Pubul (a castle he decorated for Gala). • Not long after moving into Pubul, a fire broke out and Dali was severely burned, but he survived. • Two years later he had a pacemaker implanted. • Dali died in 1989 in the tower of his museum from heart failure.
