URLs • Domain Name System (DNS)provides a mnemonic equivalent of a numeric IP address and ensures that every site on the Internet has an unique address. • Ensures each Web page has its own URL - (uniform resource locator).
Domains • DNS divides the Internet into a series of component networks called domains. • Large domains • Divided into smaller domains • Each domain responsible for maintaining unique addresses in the next lower-level domain, or subdomain. • Each host on the Internet is assigned a domain name based on its usage.
URL Format • protocol://machine address/path/filename • http://www.udel.edu/interlit/chp1.html • The protocol determines how the communication is handled. • The machine address contains the following: • hostname.subdomain.top-level-domain • The path points to a specific site within the server. • The filename is the name of the document.
Home Pages • Three different meanings on the Web: • Main page for a particular site • First page that opens when you start your browser • Page that is loaded first time browser is used • Default home page can be changed • Help organize and access information at site
Hypertext Links • Words that trigger events linked to text • Underlined and printed in different color • Can change default color of hot words • Modify browser’s preferences • Colors must not be set by page author
Hyperpicture Links • Pictorial hot spots that trigger events linked to image. • Images can be: • little icons • larger graphics • multiple hot spots in one image
Web Navigation Tools • Navigation Buttons - Located at top of browser • Back • Forward • Home • Stop • History List • Three ways to access list • Show slightly different information • Bookmark • A pointer to a Web page
History List • Click down arrow just to right of Netsite/Location box. • List shows most recent few pages. • Includes only URLs typed or entered with Open Page command on File menu. • Does not include sites visited by clicking a link.
History List • Click Go on the menu bar. • Displays all sites visited during this session. • Includes both sites visited by linking and by entering URL in Location box. • Does not include sites visited in previous sessions.
History List • Select History from Communicator menu • Press Ctrl-H • Displays entry on separate line. • Contains page title, URL, and other information. • Includes history from previous sessions.
Configure History • To set History Parameters • Select Preferences from the Edit menu. • Click Navigator category. • In History section enter number of days to accumulate • To clear History, click the Clear History button.
Bookmarks • To ADD a Bookmark • Click the Bookmark icon of the Toolbar bar • Click Communicator and click Bookmarks, then click Add Bookmark. • If you have a lot of bookmarks, you should organize them in folders.
Bookmarks • To CHANGE the name of a bookmark • Select and right-click the bookmark • Click on Bookmark Properties • In the name box enter the new name
Bookmarks • To CREATE a folder • Select and right-click the existing folder under which the new folder should be created. • Choose New Folder from the context menu • Enter the name of your new folder and click OK • To ADD a bookmark to a particular folder • Click File Bookmark on the menu and select the desired folder.
Bookmarks • To SAVE a bookmark file to a floppy disk • Click Edit Bookmark • Click File on the menu bar • Click Save As • Click Save In list box and type A:\ • Click the Save button to save the bookmark file and close the dialog box
Bookmarks • To CREATE a new bookmark file • Click Communicator • Click Bookmarks • Click Edit Bookmark • Click File on the menu bar • Click New, Blank Page - This opens the Composer window • Click Save As and give the empty page a name….be sure that file type is HTML and the correct disk/drive is selected. • Close the Composer window • Before creating or opening a new bookmark file, be sure you know where your current bookmark mark file is located.
