Let’s talk about Training Objectives! Integrated Education and Training Technical Assistance: IET Phone Home, August 7, 2019, 12:00-1:00 pm
What is a Training Objective? Def. 1 - Measurable steps that are needed to achieve the overall training program goal. Def. 2 - Measurable results of a training program expressed in terms of • the desired behavior or skill, • conditions under which it has to occur, and • the benchmark against it will be measured. Def. 3 - Should be concise and succinct (single, short sentences), meaningful, and measurable. Example: Learner/Student will be able to + action verb + criteria Integrated Education and Training Technical Assistance: IET Phone Home, August 7, 2019, 12:00-1:00 pm
Are these good Training Objectives? • Students will gain an understanding about the importance of workplace safety. • Students will receive training for OSHA, forklift and CPR/First Aid. • Students will understand the importance of attitude and teamwork in the workplace. • Students will learn how to use a ruler. • Word and Excel • Take the certification exam; Set up for reception for graduation Non-specific Overview of the Training Fewer than 5 Integrated Education and Training Technical Assistance: IET Phone Home, August 7, 2019, 12:00-1:00 pm
How do I know what the Training Objectives are? Do I have to make them up? Would someone reviewing my SSLO know what the training component involves by reading the Training Objectives listed? Integrated Education and Training Technical Assistance: IET Phone Home, August 7, 2019, 12:00-1:00 pm
Step #1 for SSLO Development Start by understanding the Training component. • Acquire copies of the Training materials including the: • Training Objectives • Training Outline and Schedule – to include when certain topics are covered • Presentations, manuals, handouts, etc. • Meet with the Trainer and ask key questions. • What are some of the reasons a participant is unable to complete the training? • What kind of support from Adult Education would increase a participant’s success? • What Content Knowledge (column 2) will students need to know to complete the training? TCSG OSHA 10-General Industry Learning Objectives Following this OSHA 10 training course, students should be able to: 1. Explain the importance of OSHA in providing a safe and healthful workplace to workers covered by OSHA. 2. Apply the OSHA regulations for walking and working surfaces to avoid slips, trips, and falls in the workplace, and recognize safe work practices for installing, maintaining, and using stairs, ladders, and scaffolds. 3. Explain the OSHA requirements for exit routes and Emergency Action plans and describe OSHA requirements for Fire Prevention plans and portable fire extinguishers. 4. Identify safe work practices around electricity, including understanding electrical terms, basic electrical safety principles, and regulations which pertain to electrical safety. 5. Select a variety of PPE based on a workplace evaluation and the types of hazards, and take responsibility for correctly fitting, maintaining, and using personal protective equipment. 6. List the elements of the Hazard Communication Standard and its training program, outline a Written Hazard Communication Program, list requirements for Material Safety Data Sheets and hazardous chemical inventories, and identify hazard warning labels. Training Objectives (OSHA 10-General Industry) Previous Objective From the Training Provider The student will be able to: Identify safe work practices around electricity, including understanding electrical terms, basic electrical safety principles, and regulations which pertain to electrical safety. The student will be able to: Understand the basics of workplace safety. Integrated Education and Training Technical Assistance: IET Phone Home, August 7, 2019, 12:00-1:00 pm
Step #2 for SSLO Development Use the Training Materials to identify reading, math, and/or writing skills that support the training objectives. • The Training Objectives are packed with little pieces of information that will guide you to the most relevant adult literacy skills. • Focus on the specific contextualized literacy skills and activities needed to complement the training component of the IET. • Don’t think about all the things you could do. Think about things you should do. • An IET class is not the same as a GED Preparation class. Trying to teach too many skills or unrelated skills will water down the purpose of the IET. • Consider the IET schedule and what needs to be taught when. • Keep in mind: Every Training Objective will not warrant an adult literacy skill. Now that I have the Content Knowledge Needed and the Contextualized Literacy Skills, do I have to align the adult literacy instruction to the College and Career Readiness Standards or the English Language Proficiency Standards? Integrated Education and Training Technical Assistance: IET Phone Home, August 7, 2019, 12:00-1:00 pm
Step #3 for SSLO Development Apply what you have learned in the CCRS Training and align the adult literacy instruction to the Standards. • Work backwards. Start with the skill/activity and find the Standard that matches it. • You do not have to teach all of the Standard; Teach the part of the Standard that is applicable to the IET. Contextualized Literacy Skill: Know and be able to correctly use common electrical terms: ex. Current, resistance, voltage, conductors, insulators, grounding, electrocution, shock. CCRS: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. Step #4 for SSLO Development Keep the lines of communication open with the IET Trainer(s). • Share the completed SSLO with the Trainer(s) and make any needed updates. • If you are able to, attend the training components to get a better idea of the content and skills needed. • Once the class ends, meet with the Trainer(s) to discuss the class and how the collaboration is working. Update the SSLO to reflect needed changes. • Use the Start, Stop, Continue* strategy for your discussions. *shown on the next slide Integrated Education and Training Technical Assistance: IET Phone Home, August 7, 2019, 12:00-1:00 pm
Start • What should we start doing? • List ideas that: • The team is not doing, but think they should be. • Are new ideas or ideas that have not been considered before. • Address new situations or factors that did not exist at the beginning of the project. • Stop • What should we stop doing? • List ideas that: • Are not working for the team. • Are not having the desired outcome. • May have proved impractical or too costly. • The team just plain dislikes. • Continue • What should we continue doing? • List ideas that: • Are working well and the team wants to keep. • The team thinks are successful. • Stakeholders value. • The team just plain likes. Integrated Education and Training Technical Assistance: IET Phone Home, August 7, 2019, 12:00-1:00 pm
Next Steps • Review the SSLO’s that you have developed so far. Do the adult literacy skills support the training objectives? Do the adult literacy activities incorporate content from the training materials? Does the schedule of when certain skills are taught align with when that skill is needed in the training component? • Make any needed changes and submit your SSLO(s) to your GPSC for feedback.
