What is WebCCAT? • A website that is easily accessible to teachers and curriculum staff • WebCCAT stands for Web-Accessed Comprehensive Curriculum Assessment Tool • It is a large test bank which will encompass • Math – grades 3 – geometry • Language Arts – grades 3-11 • Social Studies – grades 3-11 • Science – grades 3-11

Where are we now? • Banks are being filled as we do this training. • First Goal: 15,000 test items in math, language arts, and 8th grade social studies TAKS should be available in Spring 2003. • Second Goal: all subjects in science and social studies (grades 3-11) are targeted for completion in September 2003. • Third goal: 3rd and 4th grade language arts in Spanish is on the drawing board.

Items specially designed to fit the TEKS student expectations in the core subject areas • Items that allow teachers to instruct and assess at the appropriate student expectation level • Multiple choice items • Short answer items (includes several response types) • Open response or performance tasks • Rubrics • Model performances

  10. Multiple-Choice Items • Consists of: • Stem which poses the question or problem • The response choices • Implementation • Assess the recall of knowledge • Application of knowledge, concept learning, and rule or generalization learning

  11. Constructed Response Questions • Short Answer Questions • Open Response The search for ideas is not restricted by a pre-established set of choices provided by the test writer.

  12. Short Answer Questions The item should require a number, a phrase, or at most, two sentences as an answer to a specific problem. (Thorndike & Hagen, 1969) • Implementation • Used when a demonstration of understanding in the student’s own words is important • The options in a structured-response questions may clue the correct answer. • Advantage • Permit a memory search for correct answer • Reduce guessing

Open Response Questions Poses a problem that requires the students (1) to identify relevant information and (2) select, organize, and integrate the information • Implementation • Performance assessment • Demonstration of writing and communication skills • Advantage • Assess cognitive tasks • Appropriate for evaluations that focus on developing skills in analysis, evaluation, synthesis, and problem solving
