  1. ToNC WorkshopEconomic Foundations

  2. Opportunities: Game theory, mechanism design, incentives : networking considers it important. Well defined forums, e.g. EC, NetEcon workshop. Well accepted within mainstream theory and networking.

  3. A categorization of network economic problems • Engineering, mechanism design • Reverse Engineering, e.g. network formation, to which game is the internet the answer? • Analysis, e.g. price of anarchy, more general properties of equilibrium

  4. Engineering, Mechanism D. • Beyond traditional games & equilibria limited/hidden info, bounded rationality bounded communication, dynamics, online • Less emphasis on Nash eq., issues of learning, lack of info, asynchrony, collusion (towards other solution concepts) • Network complexity, computational mechanism design • Mechanism design without money • Axiomatic approach to network design

  5. Engineering (cont) • Incentives for evolvability, deployability • Tradeoff between end-to-end vs smarts inside the network • Reputation theory (e.g in P2P, denial of service) • Security, is there a formalization of deception

  6. Reverse Engineering Games • What games give rise to internet like networks? • Axiomatic approaches to protocols (BGP example) • WWW, a convincing model, economics driven

  7. Analysis • Properties of equilibria, properties predictive of network performance (e.g. conductance) • Price of information hiding in internet

  8. General concerns • Scope of networking (social, biological probably yes, what’s not included?)

  9. Other issues End-to-end vs content aware tradeoffs
