Where should my child be right now? Literacy Checklist At the beginning of first grade my child should be able to… • recognize and tell all letters of the alphabet (it’s okay for q, p, b, and d to still get mixed up) • know the sounds of the alphabet and blend 3 to 4 letter words • read sight and high frequency words within 3 seconds (Dolch- PrePrimer, Primer; Imagine It- K) • read a level C, D, or E text almost fluently and comprehend (independently) …so what does that mean?

Why are assessments important? • Additional support needs recognized • Monitors progressions of learning • It allows the first grade teachers to compare data to see how each class perform and to share teaching strategies
What Parents Can Do • Read with your child 20 minutes each day in a quiet, comfortable spot • Read different types of materials. • Let your child see you reading. • Read aloud to your child and reread favorite stories. • Let your child read to you. • Talk about what you and your child read, ask comprehension questions • Allow child to look at picture to figure out words • Make sure your child is pronouncing the words correctly and understands the meaning of difficult words
Reacting To Errors • Give your child 10 seconds of wait time to figure out the word • Ask, ” What do you think the word could be?” • Let your child use picture clues. • Have your child reread the sentence • Ask your child to sound out the word • Tell your child the word • Praise your child
