  2. Recap • They are gifts from God operating in and through us by the Holy Spirit. • Available to anyone who has faith to use them. • For the advancing of the Kingdom of God in the church and in the world.

The Discerning of Spirits Definition • A believer is given supernatural ability to see into the spirit realm to distinguish, differentiate or perceive angels, demons, or the condition of the human spirit, whether it be good or evil and also the operation of the Holy Spirit. • The person flowing in this gift and being used in this gift is able to recognise the identity, sometimes the personality or the condition of the spirit behind different manifestations or abilities. • To put it a bit more simply, this gift enables the person to see into the spirit realm and see which spirit is operating.

  4. Discerning • Diakrisis: a distinguishing, discerning, judging. • Hebrews 5:14: the distinguishing of good and evil • Diakrino: to separate or make a distinction.

  5. Spirits • Spirits are eternal. • God is a spirit. • We are made in His image. • We communicate with Him through our spirit.

  6. Types of spirits • The Holy Spirit • Angelic beings - good angels • Human spirits • Evil spirits or demons

  7. Purposes of the gift 1. Helps in delivering the afflicted, the oppressed and the tormented. • Minds that are wrecked and driven by cruel spirits • Power of speech is robbed by dumb spirits • Limbs are twisted by spirits of infirmity • Oppression over the mind

  8. Purposes of the gift 3. Aids in stopping the plans of the enemy. 4. Exposes error, seducing spirits, lying spirits, doctrines of devils and damnable heresies. 5. Unmasks demonic “miracle workers”. 2. Discovers servants of the devil.

  9. Purposes of the gift 6. Helps us discern in the using of the other gifts e.g. wisdom, prophecy and knowledge. 7. Helps us know when it’s the Holy Spirit talking and when it’s just human opinion. 8. Confirms and witnesses to the Holy Spirit and is backed by scripture. 9. Helpful when praying for deliverance and healing.

Conclusion • Empowered by the Holy Spirit working in and through us to help us see and hear clearly what is godly, what is just human and what is evil. • This is a powerful and useful gift which exposes the sly and subtle ways of the enemy. It requires a heart that is open to the Holy Spirit and some boldness is it’s use. • It can be a bit confrontational but it can change and even save a person’s life!
