  1. University of Massachusetts – Amherst MRSEC. DMR 0213695 Closed Loop Phase Behavior The differential dilation of blocks of polystyrene-block-poly(n-alkyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers with n =2 ~ 4 with supercritical carbon dioxide was used to understand and manipulate the phase behavior of the blocks as a function of temperature. In the absence of SCF-CO2 only a lower disorder-to-order transition (LDOT), is seen within an experimentally accessible temperature range. With SCF-CO2, Watkins, Russell and Kim (Pohang) demonstrated the existence of a closed-loop behavior (the first such behavior seen in a polymeric system) with the existence of a re-entrant homogeneous state.. These results suggest that the closed-loop phase behavior is a general phenomenon for weakly interacting polymeric systems. When coupled with flow behavior, these findings have significant ramification in polymer processing.
