  1. Electronics Jianui Gu The Ohio State University “When a great team loses through complacency, it will constantly search for new and more intricate explanations to explain away defeat.” Pat Riley

  2. Electronics Commissioning CERN schedule allowed only 3 Commissioning Days Dec. 19,2007 – Jan 19, 2008 We have had 5 weeks to Look at ME+ Electronics Team A – Greg, Misha, Fred,Igor, Jay, Jordan Tucker, Chad Jarvis,Shi-Chuan Kao,Nick Kypreos, John Babb • 162 chamber's electronics powered • 95 % of boards communicated immediately • All firmware on detector boards upgraded • DMB,TMB,VMECC,ALCT • Greatest portion of time - Timing Constants • Relatively Few Board Problems • replaced 1 VMECC, 3 DMBs, 1 TMB • barely touched spare boards • All spare boards at CERN except: • ~100 repaired CFEBs stored at OSU • ~20 DMBs under repair at OSU • 10 VMECC in various test stands Most Boards/Chambers have not been powered for more than a few hours in several years

  3. Electronics Problems Encountered • TTC Missing Hard Reset Problems • - CCB initialization • - DCC ??? • VMECC new firmware hangs software • - new firmware release last week (fixed) • some CFEB/DMB userid's erased • Many skew clear cables need to be reseated • 2 Fiber Cassettes Reversed • CFEB firmware downloading failure ME+1/1/35 CFEB1 • TMB - some red warning for TMB status 3.3V or 1.5V reading) • CFEB - some crazy temp readings • CFEB - a few rx scans failed (not essential) Serious?! Could be a lot worse…

  4. Status – Overall View at present electronics read in for 110/468=23% of detector • Readout (Working on it): • ME+1 12/104 missing • - problems understood (probably fixed by now) • ME+2(far),ME+3(far) 33/51 missing • - not yet properly timed • Lesson’s Learned(Still learning) • Timing Difficult • - cable delays are no godsend • Need quick feedback on Farm Data • Reference Chambers in Software not Crate/Slot • - DBs needed (kludged for now) • Commissioning needs to be done board by board • - There are no short cuts

  5. Are we going to make it? Not at this Rate ! We need to gain a month! 150 chambers/6 weeks Early June • HV/LV/Cooling/Fibers??? Expect Delays! • YE-1 Fiber Blowing started • Timing is still the Major Issue • electronics not debugged until DAQ works • we uncover “real” problems in data taking • ME+ chamber electronics needs to be fully • commissioned by Mid-March to join the Cosmic Runs • We are eating up a large amount of time • even being able to pulse 150 chambers ! • We are leaving no time for swapping front-end boards, Chamber problems, Global Commissioning Mid-March: Team A diverts to installing YE- Fiber Patch Cabling,… • Commissioning Needs to Speed Up • Double Shifts !?###?! • Division of Labor …
