Effects of Urbanization • Different CLASSES OF PEOPLE have emerged and exist in the cities • **Great majority of city dwellers are LOW INCOME WORKERS • Families have changed – NUCLEAR (SMALL) families replaced extended families • People feel less attachment to ANCESTORS, village and traditional life
Westernization: For better or worse? • Westernization – the introduction of western TECHNOLOGY and VALUES • People desire the new TECHNOLOGY but many warn against the VALUES.
Women’s Lives • ATTITUDESabout women’s roles are slowly changing • Some governments are passing laws to help **First ELECTED FEMALE PRESIDENT in Africa Liberia’s Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
Education • Governments have promoted school and increased LITERACY • Build schools, pay for education • Hopefully help to build unity • RATES of education are slow to change also • Still very few people attend universities
