  1. Innovasjon ved Fysisk Institutt Turning Top Science into Products Gruppelederforum8. Februar 2013Jonny ØstensenElin Melby Ivar Bergland

  2. INNOVATION Clever people Research UiO + HSØ Public research funding 5 BNOK Knowledge (publications) Knowledge-based Industries and products Inven2 Inven2’s role is to transfer research results into innovative products for new or existing businesses

Utvidelse for beskyttelse Konkurrerende produkt mulighet Resultat i markedet = ditt produkt Resultateri dag Spissing for salg patentdekning Konkurrerende produkt mulighet

  7. Kommersialisering er et virkemiddel for nyskapning • Betalingsvilje = vilje til utvikling hos partner A sustainable industry needs to be profitable. The ideas we select for development need to create profit

  8. Utvikling og finansiering av innovasjonsprosjekter (Tall for 81 UiO-DOFIer som er 1.5-2.5 år gamle) Novelty? Patentability? Customer need? Market? Data support? Potential for realization? Patenting (if applicable) = Beslutning om videre utvikling

  9. Innovasjonsresultater,(Inven2 totalt) Ideas/Inventions Patent applications Commercializations 9

  12. DOFIs from Department of Physics

  13. PROF. ERIK OLAI PETTERSEN CO-INNOVATORS: Nina Edin, Peter Ebbesen, Joe Alexander Sandvik, and international collaborators PRIMARY EMPLOYMENT: Department of Physics, Biophysics and Medical Physics, UiO FIELD OF RESEARCH: Pettersen’s main area of research is the effect of ionizing radiation on living organisms, especially development and treatment of cancer. He focuses on small radiation doses and low dose rates, and in particular he has concentrated on the radiation sensitivity of cells with low avaiability of oxygen. Pettersen is highly engaged in large international research collaborations and is most successfull in acquiring EU funding for his projects. At the moment he is heading the EU project METOXIA aiming to develop methods that specifically locate and inactivate cells in hypoxic areas to obtain a cancer-specific effect selective for the most harmful of the cancer cells. • INNOVATION TRACK RECORD: • 9 submitted DOFIs • 5 established innovation projects • 4 patent applications 13 Picture is taken from http://www.ostlendingen.no/nyheter/elverum/elverumsing-til-br-kamp-mot-kreft-1.4571928

  14. PROF. JØRAN IDAR MOEN CO-INNOVATORS: TorfinnLindem, Tore André Bekkeng, EspenTrondsen, Arne Pedersen, Knut S. Jacobsen PRIMARY EMPLOYMENT: Head ofDepartment ofFysics, UniversityofOslo and Group Leader ofthereseachgroup STAR (Space Technology and Research) SECONDARY EMPLOYMENT: Professor II, The University Centre in Svalbard FIELD OF RESEARCH: Moen’s main interest is studying Solar-Terrestrial coupling in the auroral cusp/ polar cap region by multi-instrument techniques, using radars and ground based optics from Svalbard, as well as satellite and sounding rockets. He is heading a sounding rocket program dedicated to study ionospheric irregularities formed by plasma instabilities in the context of cusp auroras and polar cap patches. The goal is to produce useful input data for future space weather services for communication and GNSS services. • INNOVATION TRACK RECORD: • 2 submitted DOFIs (related to space weather) • 2 established innovation projects • 1 patent application • 3 license agreements with EidelAS • 1 verification project (ANCHOR) 14

  15. PROF. BENGT G. SVENSSON CO-INNOVATORS: EduoardMonakhov, Andrej Kuznetsov, Klaus Magnus Johansen PRIMARY EMPLOYMENT: Department ofFysics, UiO, and Group Leader oftheSemiconductor Physics Group (LENS), Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) FIELD OF RESEARCH: The overall vision is “application-motivated basic research” addressing rather fundamental materials science and physics issues but in most cases with a clear vision for long-term applications relevant to enabling technologies for renewable energy. On a more detailed level, a central ingredient is to cover the whole ‘value-chain’ from materials synthesis to realization and evaluation of test (device) structures. • INNOVATION TRACK RECORD (per Dec 2012): • 3 submitted DOFIs (related to zinc oxide) • 2 established innovation projects • 3 patent applications (incl co-ownership with REC)

  16. Inven2 will help you to get the funding • The Research Council • FORNY2020: Commercializing R&D results • Funding Norwegian technology transfer offices and projects in need of proof-of-concept • BIOTEK2021: Biotechnology for innovation • HelseSør-Øst • Commercialization funding for PhD students • http://www.uio.no/forskning/doktorgrad-karriere/forskerutdanning/kommstipend.html • Applications EU, NFR • Writing • Agreements • In general: • Improved focus on commercialization often leads to more industry contact, which again can open new doors for funding • The Research Council • FORNY2020: Commercializing R&D results • Funding Norwegian technology transfer offices and projects in need of proof-of-concept • BIOTEK2021: Biotechnology for innovation • HelseSør-Øst • Commercialization funding for ph.d.students • http://www.uio.no/forskning/doktorgrad-karriere/forskerutdanning/kommstipend.html • Applications EU, NFR • Writing • Agreements Picture is taken from http://moneytreeplant.blogspot.no/2012/12/money-tree-plant-is-traditional-symbol.html

  17. Conclusions • Largest TTO in Norway • Commercializesinventions from theUniversityof Oslo and Oslo University Hospital • Seeks partners for outlicensing and/or industrialcollaborations • Expects more commercialproducts to comeoutof Department ofPhysics • Wants to learn to knowyoubetter! :
