Unit Summary • Students will review the poetic techniques and devices used in the various works by Robert Frost. They will be able to identify the literary techniques in other works, and they will use them in their own work of poetry or literature. The students will then make a creative visual presentation to supplement their reading of poetry or literature.
Curriculum Framing Question • Essential: What makes a poem a poem? • Unit: How does Robert Frost create vivid imagery and sensory detail in his poetry? • Content: What is alliteration? What is an example of aesthetic imagery that Frost uses in Stopping by Woods?
Goals I hope to for my students to -Learn the particular methods of expression through poetry -Gain the valuable experience of vocal expression through visual presentation -Develop an appreciation for the metrical and poetic technique -Become more familiar with the styles of famous poets like Frost
Approaches • During the study of Robert Frost’s Poetry, the students will • Recognize basic literary structures and themes • Use creative strategies to apply poetic techniques to their own work • Create a product that demonstrates their learning and application • Develop communicational skills by presenting to a real audience
21st century learning • Students will develop higher order thinking skills applicable to the 21st century by • Using the essential and unit questions to guide their research of metrical and poetic technique • Present their creative products to the class • Reflect on their abilities as learners, writers, speakers and presentors
Gauging student needs • Guided by essential question (from CFQ) • Provides supplementary information about poetics and terms • Allows teacher to use this information as a cornerstone to base instruction from and plan activities • Students also gain a general understanding of the unit, as well as an awareness of what to expect
