Writing Process How do I become a better writer? ~Ms. Treuel October 2013-14
Overview • Five Steps include~ • Prewriting • Drafting • Revising • Editing • Publishing
Step One: Prewriting • First thing~Consider FAT-P • With a neighbor, think about what each letter of FAT-P might represent. • Remember, these are the first things you should consider when preparing to write.
F stands for… • Form • Ask yourself: Are you writing a letter, poem, essay, short story/narrative, etc.?
A stands for… • Audience • Ask yourself: Who will be reading your writing?
T stands for: • Topic~ • Ask yourself: What are you writing about today?
P stands for… • Purpose~ • Ask yourself: Why are you writing? (Hint~It is not because your teacher told you to write something.)
More Prewriting • After you figure out the form, audience, topic, and purpose of your writing, you may also do the following in prewriting~ • List words/ideas, or draw pictures • Gather information • Brainstorm and organize ideas • Think about the 5Ws (Who, What, When, Where, and Why) • Create a writing plan/outline
Step Two: Drafting • Put thoughts, feelings, and ideas on paper • Begin the actual writing • Do not forget your AQQS. How will you hook the reader into your writing? • During this step, you should not worry about spelling, grammar, capitalization, or punctuation. This will come later. Trust me!
More Drafting • Prioritize your ideas • Write in complete sentences • Divide text into separate paragraphs • Organize paragraphs into the following format~ • Introduction • Body • Closing
Step Three: Revising • What is this? Large scale changes~ • Adding text • Cutting/replacing words/phrases • Adding transitional words • Rearranging parts • During this step, you are thinking about the reader. • Read over your writing and make sure it stays on topic. • Add relevant, supporting details a reader may need for the writing to make sense. • Delete unnecessary words and details. • Look for a logical order of events~focus on sequential order.
Step Three: Revising • Use descriptive words. • Rewrite sentences so that they are easy for the reader to understand. • Make sure the writing is appropriate for your audience.
Step Four: Editing • What is this? • Checking for correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanics • Fix any errors • Use a dictionary if necessary • Conduct peer editing~two sets of eyes (or more) is better than one
Step Five: Publishing • What is this? • Creation of your final draft • Make sure your handwriting is neat or that your typed copy is correct and formatted properly. • Read the writing aloud. • Share the writing with others again.
What do you remember? • Turn to another neighbor and see what you can jot down together about the following~ • What does FAT-P represent? • What are the five main steps of the writing process?
Are you ready to write? Let the fun begin!!!
