  5. The Jesus of Faith ≠ The Jesus of History

  6. The Real Jesus

  7. I. A Real Person “Ananus was of this disposition, he thought he had now proper opportunity [to exercise his authority]. Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the Sanhedrin of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned…” Josephus, Antiquities xx.ix.i

  8. I. A Real Person “Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works – a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ; and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men among us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him, for he appeared to them alive again the third day, as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him; and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.” Josephus, Antiquities xviii.iii.iii

  9. I. A Real Person “Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome… Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty: then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind.” Tacitus, Annals 15.44.

  10. I. A Real Person “I have asked them if they are Christians, and if they admit it, I repeat the question a second and third time, with a warning of the punishment awaiting them. It they persist, I order them to be led away for execution; for, whatever the nature of their admission, I am convinced that their stubbornness and unshakable obstinacy ought not go unpunished…They also declared that the sum total of their guilt or error amounted to no more than this: they had met regularly before dawn on a fixed day to chant verses alternately amongst themselves in honor of Christ as if to a god, and also to bind themselves by oath, not for any criminal purpose, but to abstain from theft, robbery, and adultery…” Pliny the Younger, Letters 10.96

  11. I. A Real Person • Jesus was a Jewish teacher. • He “worked wonders.” • He was the Messiah, the Christ. • Jesus was rejected by Jewish leaders. • Jesus was crucified by Pontius Pilate in the reign of Tiberius. • His followers believed he was alive. • His followers spread beyond Palestine by A.D. 64 and worshipped Jesus as God.

  12. II. A Real Claim • Jesus claimed to be Lord • “Christ, Son of God” (Matt. 16:13-16) • Forgave Sins (Mk. 2:5-7) • “I Am” (John 8:24, 58) • Condemned for claim (Lk. 22:66-71) • Jesus’ Claim is either True or False!

  13. II. A Real Claim If Jesus’ claim is false and He KNEW it was false, then He was a Liar

  14. II. A Real Claim If Jesus’ claim is false and He did NOT know it was false, then He was a Lunatic

  15. III. Real Testimony to Investigate John the Baptist (John 5:32-35)

  16. John the Baptist “Now, some of the Jews thought that the destruction of Herod’s army came from God, and that very justly, as a punishment for what he did against John, that was called the Baptist; for Herod slew him, who was a good man, and commanded the Jews to exercise virtue, both as to righteousness towards one another, and piety towards God, and so to come to baptism…Accordingly he was sent a prisoner, out of Herod’s suspicious temper, to Macherus, the castle I before mentioned, and was there put to death.” Josephus, Antiquities xviii.v.ii

  17. III. Real Testimony to Investigate John the Baptist (John 5:32-35) The Works I do (John 5:36) God the Father (John 5:37) O.T. Scriptures (John 5:39, 46-47)

  18. Old Testament Prophecy Jeremiah 23:5 "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. Luke 3:31 the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of Nathan, the son of David

  19. Old Testament Prophecy Micah 5:2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting." Luke 2:4-7 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
