1938-2012 Tyrannies [that] should be examined: [ In teaching chemistry in higher education ] the tyranny of content and coverage - the textbook must be completely covered at all costs; (2) the tyranny of certification and evaluation of learning - being able to rank students is more important than what students learn or think about chemistry; (3) the tyranny of rigor and difficulty of material - median scores on exams that are humiliatingly low and killer exams are good for students; (4) the tyranny of "the curve" - independent of student learning or instructor teaching, the curve will determine the distribution of grades.
