1938-2012 Tyrannies [that] should be examined: [ In teaching chemistry in higher education ] the tyranny of content and coverage - the textbook must be completely covered at all costs; (2) the tyranny of certification and evaluation of learning - being able to rank students is more important than what students learn or think about chemistry; (3) the tyranny of rigor and difficulty of material - median scores on exams that are humiliatingly low and killer exams are good for students; (4) the tyranny of "the curve" - independent of student learning or instructor teaching, the curve will determine the distribution of grades. Schweitzer Professor of Chemistry, Columbia University and former co-chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering. • He was widely recognized by national and international awards as a leader and pioneer in the area of supramolecular chemistry, organic photochemistry, molecular spectroscopy, host-guest chemistry and magnetic effects on photochemical reactions. • He sponsored the PhD thesis of 70 students, had mentored 200 postdocs. • Over 100 undergraduates have been trained in research under his supervision. • He was the author of two textbooks on Organic Photochemistry, which is considered the “bible” of the field for several generations by organic photochemists since 1965. • He published over 900 research papers and was selected as one of the most highly cited chemists for the past two decades. • He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
