Making All Things New Our Lady of Good Counsel Staten Island, NY
Cardinal Dolan – Oct. 3 Pastoral letter on Making All Things New • “We no longer need 368 parishes in their current locations! Due to demographic changes, we may need to create new parishes, or expand some, to serve the migration of parishioners outside of the city, while closing or merging others.”
Is OLGC one of the parishes that will close or merge? We don’t know!
What is the #1goal of Making All Things New? To enhance the vibrancy of parish life throughout the Archdiocese of New York.
What kind of Models of Parish Communities are possible in the future? • Collaborative, • Linked or • Consolidated
Collaborative Parishes • Parishes have formal cooperative relationships with other parishes for the sake of jointly promoting the Gospel and the New Evangelization.... • They jointly plan and implement adult formation programs, and other ministries. • Still separate parishes with different pastors, sharing some staff, ministry and resources.
Linked Parishes • Linked Parishes are formed when two or more parishes share a pastor. • The parishes remain distinct canonical and corporate entities. • The parishes are encouraged to work toward combining parish council meetings and to establishing common committees where possible. • Linked Parishes do many things cooperatively, such as programs and in-services.
Consolidated Parishes • Two or more parishes come together to form a new parish community under one pastor. • When parishes are consolidated, the newly formed parish will have a new name and one worship site. • Net assets and liabilities of the merging parishes go to the newly formed parish. • Again, the aim of consolidation is to bring together two or more communities of faith so as to create more vibrant, effective, and efficient parishes.
