MESSENGER at Mercury • First of 3 flybys • Next flyby is October 6, 2008 • March 2011 is final orbit insertion
LRO returns to the MoonLaunches October 28, 2008 Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will be in a polar orbit, imaging potential landing sites and searching for deposits of water ice, ilmenite and olivine.
The Moon:Our Next Frontier (Again) • The Moon will be the “next step” in getting humans to Mars. • Ilmenite contains He-3 and represents a potential “gold rush” for nations.

DAWN for two asteroids Check out the Dawn Interactives (especially ion propulsion) on the website.
Saturn’s new ring • Discovered between the G and E rings in Sept. 2006. • Now there are 8 - 9 rings, if you include this (the Janus ring) and the Pallene ring.
Earth from Saturn Three views from the same image: Top: Earth to scale in the rings Top right: Earth and Moon magnified Right: Earth’s ocean blues are evident.
Deep Impact becomes EPOXIComet Hartley 2 • Is attempting to image extrasolar planetary systems • Will encounter Comet Hartley 2 in Oct. 2010
Stardust: Complicated Crystals • Crystals in comet tell the story of the early solar system. • Composed of: Ca, Al, V, Ti, N, Pt, W, Os, Ru, Mo.
Stardust to revisit Comet Tempel 1 • Deep Impact blew the hole, but Stardust will revisit the comet in 2011 to check for changes.
New Horizons Still on track for a Pluto encounter on July 14, 2015. Stay tuned…
