2014-2015 Graduate Scholarships JUNE AND BILL FLATT NUTRITION EXCELLENCE GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is available to students in human nutrition or other majors related to the food industry who have demonstrated service, strong research interests and competencies and involvement in extra-curricular activities such as student governance and leadership. Financial need will be considered. HAZEL AND GENE FRANKLIN SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is available for both graduate and undergraduate students. Applicants must have at least two semesters remaining in their degree program. Evidence of academic excellence and professional commitment must be presented by the applicants. NANCY HAILEY AND SIS STRICKLAND HAILEY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is available to a master’s degree candidate in the College who has a minimum of 18 semester hours remaining to complete the degree program. Preference will be given to applicants with an expressed financial need. ANNE AND EARL HALTIWANGER SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to graduate students within the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and will be awarded annually. DOE HARDEN SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to either a graduate or undergraduate student who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance, professional potential and student leadership. Financial need will be a primary consideration. 4-H activity will be rewarded and should be documented. VIRGINIA WILBANKS KILGORE SCHOLARSHIPS This scholarship recognizes outstanding graduate students, whether entering or currently enrolled in the College. GRE scores and cumulative averages in previous work must be documented. To be eligible, applicants must have at least 1150 on the GRE or have a 3.5 grade point average. GLENN AND HELEN BURTON FEEDING THE HUNGRY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to doctoral students holding assistantships whose research involves human nutrition. Renewable up to three years. WILLIAM O. CASTER SCHOLARSHIP Dr. William O. Caster was a professor in the department of Foods and Nutrition, who held a deep interest in the sciences related to Nutrition. His colleagues, former students, and friends created this fund in his memory. It is intended to fund a graduate or undergraduate student studying Nutrition Science with a superior academic record and ability in scientific inquiry. THOMAS F. COMER SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to entering master’s degree students who will be offered an assistantship in the College. ELEONORA M. COSTA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP Mrs. Zena Costa Brown created this endowment in memory of her Mother, who was a constant source of support and in honor of the great value that her Mother placed on higher education. The fund shall provide graduate support in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. KAREN R. DAVIS GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP The Karen R. Davis Scholarship recognizes a graduate student in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences whose focus is children and families. Preference will be given, but not limited to students who plan a career in Development Therapy-Developmental Teaching. Recipients may be M.S. or Ph.D. students who have completed at least one year of graduate studies. IRIS PRICE DOVER SCHOLARSHIP Iris Price Dover attended Georgia Southern University for two years and transferred to UGA following her sisters, Virginia Price Turner and Marion Price Elkin. Mrs. Dover believed her FACS background gave her a well-rounded education that prepared her for life. She and her sisters have created a true family legacy by establishing three endowments in our College.
2014-2015 Graduate Scholarships ELISE B. RICHEY SCHOLARSHIP Elise Bray Richey, BSHE 1938, left a generous contribution in her estate for a FACS student scholarship. The recipient may be either graduate or undergraduate, must have a 3.0 or higher GPA and should not be a member of a social sorority or fraternity. L. FRANK AND GEORGIA D. RODGERS GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP The purpose of the fund is to provide a scholarship for a graduate student in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Preference shall be given, but is not limited, to those studying Housing or Furnishings & Interiors. Financial need shall be a factor, but should not be considered the primary criteria. ELIZABETH T. SHEERER GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize a student in the department of Child and Family Development who has excelled academically, has strong research interests and shows promise and leadership for the professional field of family and consumer sciences. ROSABELLE CARR KOELSCHE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College. Graduate applicants should have a minimum of 18 hours remaining. BETTY LANE SCHOLARSHIP Dr. Betty Lane is very passionate about higher education and puts great emphasis on the importance of continued education. She retired from Georgia Southern University as Division Director of Home Economics and Professor Emerita. Dr. Betty Lane’s endowment is intended for a graduate student in the department of Houisng and Consumer Economics. MARIAN CHESNUT MCCULLERS SCHOLARSHIP A retired Vice President from Atlanta Gas Light, Marian Chesnut McCullers endowed this scholarship because she knew she would have never achieved her level of professionalism without her BSHE degree earned form UGA in 1946. This scholarship shall be awarded to either a graduate or undergraduate student in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences with a preference given but not limited to students in the Housing and consumer Economics department. GLADYS F. (NANNIE) NESBITT/FLATT EDUCATION FUND This scholarship is available to students in human nutrition or other majors related to the Food Industry who have demonstrated service and involvement in extracurricular activities such as student governance and leadership. Financial need will be considered. GWENDOLYN BROOKS O’CONNELL SCHOLARSHIP This award will be presented annually to a master’s or doctoral-level student. The scholarship is open to graduate students with outstanding performance who show most promise in the instructional area. Candidate must be nominated by their department and must have been enrolled in the College for at least one semester. EMILY QUINN POU AND JOE (J.W.) POU SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in the College who have at least two semesters remaining in which to complete their degree program. MARIAN WANG SCHOLARSHIP The Marian Wang scholarship recognizes an outstanding Family and Consumer Sciences undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Dietetics. KARIN E. WILLIS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is open to graduate and undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 2.75, and is renewable. Preference will be given to student athletes, including cheerleaders and twirlers..
