  4. City of Amarillo Outdoor Watering Conservation Challenge Don’t Turn Your Lawn Into a “Wetland”

  5. Tips for Watering “Right” • Water deeply and less often. • Get the water to the root zone • Twice a week is enough • Only about an inch of water is needed a week to maintain a healthy lawn- the amount that would fill a tuna can. The average sprinkler system should run approximately 30 minutes for water to reach the deep root zone. Verify actual application rate using a lawn gauge or the tuna can method. • Water at the right time of day. • 10 PM to 6 AM is best • Not after 10 AM in any case • Do not water for several days after a good rain. • When we should not water. • Not during the heat of the day • Not during windy weather • Not when it is raining • Not during freezing weather • Not when rain is predicted • Mow high and mow often • Do not cut the grass too short (not less than 1½”) • Use mulch • Helps retain moisture and control weeds • Fertilize only as needed. • Proper use of fertilizer – not too much – refer to label information.
