Initial Goals of the Plan Develop Regional PIT Tag Monitoring Plan To ensure adequate performance indices are obtained into the future Meet needs of BiOp, FWP, Accords, HCPs Improve efficiency- coordinate tagging among All-H user groups Minimize effect s of tagging Inform the more comprehensive, regional tagging and marking forum

History Spring/Summer 2011 AA/NOAA/NPCC workgroup drafted initial draft PIT plan http://www.salmonrecovery.gov/ResearchReportsPublications.aspx Fall 2011 AA & NOAA held a work session with the region and requested review and comments on the draft PIT plan January 2012 Comments received from FPC, ODFW, PSMFC, Chelan & Douglas PUDs, and individuals (2) February 2012 AA & NOAA confer @ comments Decide to re-focus the document

Feedback from Region- Primary Issues Purpose and application of the document needs clarification Needs more prescriptive prioritization of actions with timelines to be considered an an action plan Needs clearer processes for coordination of tagging among agencies Willamette Basin and other species besides anadromous salmonids should be treated Tradeoffs between information needs and potential tags effects should be further treated

So- AA & NOAA Decided to: Restructure, refocus and revise the document Refocus on FCRPS BiOp needs and objectives Shift away from the “action plan” concept Restructure it into a “status and path forward” document Perform alternatives assessments in follow-on work to support action planning Use alternative assessments to inform the upcoming 2014 FCRPS BiOp Remand and 2014-2018 BiOp Implementation Plan Leave broader regional issues to other forums- Other species, Willamette Basin needs, etc. NPCC Tagging & Marking Forum, Willamette BiOp RME process, AFEP (e.g., lamprey).

  7. “The Status and Needs of the PIT Tag Information System as It Relates to FCRPS BiOp Requirements” Scope will be reformulated, consistent with the title Identify Pit information improvements across Hs that are needed to meet BiOp requirements Describe evaluations that are needed in order to select among options. Describe processes or steps to ensure coordination of federal and regional fishery agency future needs with regard to- Stock coverage,& numbers of tagged fish, and Locations of new detection systems.

  8. Next Steps Revise the document with FCRPS BiOp focus (Spring 2012) Conduct assessments identified in the “Status” document Use the document and assessments to inform the 2014 FCRPS BiOp Remand and 2014-2018 BiOp Implementation Plan Work with PSMFC to incorporate the PIT Tag Forecast Database into PTAGIS.
