  1. The Roswell Park Cancer Institute and University at Buffalo Center for Advanced Biomedical and BioEngineering Technologies CABET A New York Center for Advanced Technology

NYSTAR Program • There are 15 Centers for Advanced Technologies throughout New York State. • Their goal is to accelerate collaborative research between academic institutions and industry that can lead to the development of commercially viable products. • There are also education, training, and business consulting capabilities present in many New York CATS.

  3. NYSTAR (New York State Office of Science, Technology, and Academic Research) was funded as part of the landmark JOBS 2001 Legislation. Goal: • To harness the academic power within New York State by investing today in the job-creating technologies of tomorrow.

  4. The RPCI/UB Center for Advanced Biomedical and Bioengineering Technologies (CABET) History: • Planning Grant was submitted in 1998 and funded in 1999. • Consultants Report recommended structure and operation. • In May of 2001 Governor George Pataki announced the creation of the CABET in Buffalo with Robert Genco as Director.

  5. CABET • Biomedical and bioengineering technologies represent areas of strength in the Buffalo-Niagara Academic and Industrial Communities. • The CAT is one of several projects from NYSTAR that is expected to boost Buffalo-Niagara Biotechnology efforts.

  6. Other NYSTAR Biotechnology Projects for the Buffalo-Niagara Community are: • The Western New York Star Center for Disease Modeling and Therapy Discovery. Joint efforts of University at Buffalo, Hauptman-Woodward, Kaleida Health and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. • A Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics. • Faculty Development Grant.

  7. Goals of the UB/RPCI CABET 1. The overall mission is to encourage collaborative academic/industrial research, education and business development for companies in New York State with an emphasis on those in the Buffalo-Niagara Region. 2. Two types of grants will be awarded: Discovery and Science Transfer.

  8. • Discovery Grants are directed to fund targeted innovative research capitalizing on genomic and other high through-put technologies for development of diagnostic tests, therapies, and other products with commercial potential.

  9. • Science Transfer Grants are aimed at late stage development projects for technologies that have had considerable fundamental research carried out, are patented, patentable, or otherwise commercially protected, and are at the stage of prototype development, preclinical or phase I clinical trial, or similar late stage development.

  11. The second goal of CABET is educational. • This will be carried out with various organizations throughout the Buffalo-Niagara Region including Western New York Technology Development Center and HCIA. • The WNY Technology Development Center offers assistance with business plans and in preparing SBIR/STTR applications.

  12. The third goal of CABET is business development. • This will be carried out through alliances with organizations such as UB Tech Transfer Office and the RPCI Technology Transfer Offices which provide expertise in patent protection and other aspects of technology transfer. • Partner with UB Alliance for early business development. • UB Incubator space and facilities for start-up companies. • Partnership with regional business development agencies, eg. ECIDA, BERC.

  13. Future Plans: 1. Leverage State dollars with industrial funds. 2. Participate in evaluating the feasibility of formulating a business development company(s) to provide venture capital. 3. Develop the process for more effective science transfer from the Buffalo-Niagara Academic Community to industry. 4. Interact with other New York State Academic Institutions and CATS to facilitate and accelerate science transfer. 5. Develop a network to facilitate obtaining venture capital and other business development funding.
