What Is Matter? • Matter is EVERYWHERE! • Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass • There are 3 main states of matter: solids, liquids, & gases (click on each) • Click here to learn a song about matter • Ready to move on? Back to Main Page
Solid, Liquid or Gas? • What kinds of solids, liquids and gases do you use in 1 day? • Take a piece of blank paper and make 3 columns • Label column 1 “Solid,” column 2 “Liquid,” and column 3 “Gas” • In column 1 list 3 examples of solids you use everyday (Think about your day from the time you wake up until you go to bed). Do the same for the “Liquid” and “Gas” columns. • Be sure the examples you list are things you use EVERYDAY • Back to Main Page
Changing Matter • Some matter changes when heated or cooled • As a scientist, you will run an experiment to observe how temperature can change the state of matter of an object • Using your worksheet, first make a hypothesis (an educated guess) about what you think will happen based on what you know about ice (solid) and water (liquid) when they are heated or cooled • Click here to continue on to the lab
Solid • A solid is a matter that holds its own shape • Solids can be hard or soft • Examples of solids: coins, wood, bricks, ice • Go back to “Matter” Page
Liquid • Liquids have no shape of their own • They flow freely when poured • Liquids take the shape of their container • Examples: Rain, Milk, Lemonade • Back to “Matter” Page
Gas • Gases have no shape • Most gases are invisible • Gases spread out to fill the entire area they are in • Examples: Steam, Air (our breath), Scents • Back to “Matter” Page
