Right-handed Shells • Most shells are right-handed. That means they twist in a clockwise direction when viewed from the top.
When you hold a shell with its opening facing you and with the pointed end at the top, the opening is almost always on the right.
The odds of finding a left-handed representative of a right-handed family are about one in a million.
The lightning whelk shell is the only whelk shell that opens on the left.
Of course, it is not true that bivalves can open on the right or left. They just open!
