IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocolfor Common Prefix Allocation (draft-jeon-ipv6-ndp-ieee802.16-01.txt ) Hongseok Jeon, ETRI Junghoon Jee, ETRI 65th IETF 16ng BoF
Goal and Scope • Goal • Support conventional host-side operations of IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocol without any modification on the 802.16 network. • Single IPv6 stack that can operation over multiple different access networks. • Support both IPCS and Ethernet CS • Scope • All SSs served by a specific AR share the Common IPv6 prefix
Issues of NDP over 802.16 • On-Link issue • IPv6 NDP • “On-link” determination by performing a longest prefix match • SSs sharing common prefix can be said to on-link IP nodes • IEEE 802.16 • Connection of 802.16 always ends at the BS • No direct communication among SSs • Multicast issue • IPv6 NDP • Delivered based on link-local multicast address • IEEE 802.16 • No dedicated CIDs for multicasting IPv6 packets • No native support for multicasting IPv6 packets among SSs
Proposed Solution • IPv6 NDP Relay for solving on-link issue • Multicast Emulation for solving multicast issue
IPv6 NDP Relay • MRP (Multicast Relaying Part) • Function to relay link-local multicast data. • IP CS • MRP can be located in AR • Relay packets which begin with “FF02” in IPv6 address • Note that packets addressed “FF02::2” is not relayed because they are link-local all-routers multicast data • Ethernet CS • MRP can be located in BS or AR • Relay packets which begin with “33-33” in Eth. address • Note that packets addressed “33-33-00-00-00-02” is not relayed because of same reason as IP CS
Multicast Emulation • Common CID (CCID) • CCID is CID for IPv6 NDP message transmission • There is just one CCID in BS, not multiple • CCID is shared by all SSs under the same BS • Replicated Unicast • IPv6 NDP msg. are delivered by repeated unicasts. • IPv6 NDP msg. with all-node multicast address. • By replicated unicasts via all the established CID on BS • IPv6 NDP msg. with solicited-node multicast address. • By replicated unicasts via CID of corresponding SSs. • BS can build up mapping table between CID and solicited-node multicast address with SS’s MAC address.
