Referencing– Why? Firstly, it indicates to your tutor that you have read widely and also shows exactly which books/articles you have read and used. Reading widely is essential before writing a good quality essay.
Referencing– Why? Secondly, it distinguishes between what are your ideas and what belongs to someone else. As in other contexts, if we borrow something from someone else, we must not pretend it is ours. Therefore, if you lift someone else’s words and put them in your essay, you must make this clear.
Referencing– Why? Thirdly, it provides a ‘tracing’ pathway: it enables anyone who is reading your essay to follow up any ideas they find interesting in the original works that you have used. Following up references is a common practice amongst students at higher levels.
