Leadership rounding with Subrata and Mike What is rounding? • Leadership rounds are scheduled, structured activitiesin which executive, managers and even board members purposefully walk through their organizations talking to staff members and customers. It is common practice in clinical areas and is used in many organizations to help improve safety, quality and staff and customer experience. • Our objectives are to observe our operations in order to make better decisions, to spot and recognize success, to identify opportunities to reinforce our mission, vision and values, and to listen to staff • We hope it goes without saying, but we will say it anyway: we want to listen, to understand and to help improve. We have no intention in this to be finding fault or blaming. • Every month we will take a day to visit two different areas in our department. We will have an informal 1:1 conversation with at least six staff members in each area to get know the work you do and discuss how things are going and what you think we can do to improve our services. We will also ask some questions related to our current departmental and organizational priorities. • We ask simply that you are thinking about how to improve and share that with us. This is your service, and we expect that you work towards making it the best it can be for our patients and citizens. When we are going to visit your area, your local leaders will help coordinate the schedule. Please take the opportunity to think about what you would like to share if we will be meeting you individually. For those we don’t have an opportunity to meet us directly, please speak with your team about any topics which are important to you. Why are we doing it? How we will do it? What we expect from you?
Our commitment “We will commit to doing a scheduled leadership round 10 times every year for a full day. Our objectives are to observe our operations in order to make better decisions, to spot and recognize success, to identify opportunities to reinforce our mission, vision and values, and to listen to staff. Our goals during each round are: 1) have a conversation with at least six staff members and ask each one how things are going and what they think we can do to improve our services; 2) take away at least one new idea for something we can do to improve our quality or operations; 3) to recognize an accomplishment, and 4) to give us specific insight to be better leaders.” Subrata Chakrabati Chair/Chief Mike Kadour Director Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
