All My Sons - Background • All My Sons is a 1947 play by Arthur Miller. The play opened on Broadway in New York City on January 29, 1947. It was twice adapted for film • Miller based All My Sons on a true story, which he read in the newspapers. The story described how a woman informed on her father , a manufacturer who had sold faulty parts for tanks to the U.S. military during World War II. These had suffered mechanical failures which had led to the deaths of many soldiers. The fault was discovered and the manufacturer was convicted. In All My Sons Miller examines the morality of the man who places his narrow responsibility to his immediate family above his wider responsibility to the men who rely on the integrity of his work
The Setting • The action of the play is set in August 1947, in the mid-west of the U.S.A. • The events occur between Sunday morning and a little after two o’clock the following morning in the back yard of the Keller’s house.
