Who are they? • Granite Mountain Interagency Hot Shot crew consisted of 20 dedicated men of various ages and backgrounds. These men were highly trained wild land firefighters, some of the best at that. On June 30, 2013, 19 of these 20 men were overcome by the Yarnell Fire. Leaving one soul survivor, and their brother Brenden Mcdonough to keep their legend alive. • http://wildfiretoday.com/2013/08/09/interview-with-brendan-mcdonough-granite-mountain-hotshots-survivor/
What Happened? • On June 30, 2013 the Granite Mountain Hot Shots were called to duty on the Yarnell Fire. It was supposed to be a quick job and they would return home soon. Things changed when they got caught in between the flames and they had to deploy their shelters. The shelters were just not enough to save these men from the scorching fire. The sole survivor Brenden was the look out at the time and therefore was not with the rest of his crew. He was going to get the trucks to pick up his crew.
Hotshot Prayer When I am called to duty, Lord ... To fight the roaring blaze ... Please keep me safe and strong ... I may be here for days. Be with my fellow crewmembers ... As we hike up to the top. Help us cut enough line ... For this blaze to stop. Let my skills and hands ... Be firm and quick. Let me find those safety zones ... As we hit and lick. For if this day on the line ... I should answer death's call ... Lord, bless my hot shot Crew ... My family, one and all. Above is the Granite Mountain Hotshots and the Biggest Juniper tree that they saved in the Doce Fire. www.americanforests.org
