CENSUS METROPOLITAN AREA (CMA) • CENSUS METROPOLITAN AREA: An urban area including all villages, towns, and smaller cities near a major urban centre, with no rural area between them • a very large urban area (known as the urban core) together with the adjacent urban and rural areas (known as urban and rural fringes) that have a high degree of social and economic integration with the urban core. • A CMA has an urban core population of at least 100,000 people.
POPULATION DENSITY CGC1P0: CANADIAN GEOGRAPHY
POPULATION DENSITY • Density – number of people per unit area • Calculated by dividing the pop. Of a region by the region’s area • Canada: • area = 9,012,112 km² • Population = 31,081,900 people • 31,081,900 ÷ 9,012,112 km² = 3.3 people / km²
POPULATION DENSITY • The population of India is approximately 1,000,000,000 (1 billion), and its total area is 3 287 590 km². Use the formula to calculate India’s population density. • 304.2 people per square km • What problems might a high pop. Density like India’s cause? • What problems might a low population density like Canada’s create?
CANADA POPULATION DENSITY • Population density = # of people per km² • Canada is 2nd largest country in the world BUT has a relatively small population. • Therefore, pop. density is low • If Canada’s entire population lived in Ontario, our pop. Density would = U.S.
Look down the 4th column on the table. Which country has the highest population density? Which has the lowest? Where does Canada rank in terms of pop. Density compared with other countries?
Look across the rows. How many countries have a lower population than Canada but a higher population density? What might account for this difference?
Do you think the population density in our area is more or less than 3 people per square km? What might account for Canada’s low overall population density?
POPULATION DENSITY • Central Business District (CBD): Downtown area of a city or town, where most of the important commercial and government activities take place. • Very high population densities (especially during the daytime) • Very expensive land value build up
